From Dave Bussiere Tidewater Council Popcorn Chairman

There have been some recent concerns about the legality of funding Scout Accounts with profits from fundraisers.  The short answer is that under current IRS regulations it is not permitted and that it may jeopardize the non-profit status of the unit and the chartering organization.

I know that it seems unfair and goes against the ideal of having Scouts earn money for their activities, however, it is the law and we should respect it.  Profits cannot be placed in an individual Scout's account.  I even asked about how the Scouts were supposed to earn money for camping but the answer is that you cannot do it with profits from a fundraiser and put it into a Scout account.  I've attached the links to the IRS website that has documents concerning distribution of fundraising profits.

I hope to have a more formal statement to distribute soon--I believe that it is being drafted.

I'll distribute more information as it becomes available.
